What is hedge reduction & shaping?
Hedge reduction is a heavier job than a regular trim. It brings down the height and/or width of an overgrown hedge, sometimes by a metre or more, and reshapes it so it can be maintained with normal cutting from then on.
Who it's for

Reducing Different Types of Hedge
How far a hedge can be cut back depends heavily on what it's made of.
Working with Roberts Roots
Todd Roberts, Founder, runs every job himself. On larger jobs he brings in a trusted team of close friends, each self-employed with their own public liability insurance. Before any cutting starts, trees are checked for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas.
Leylandii and conifers
Conifers generally won't regrow from old brown wood. Reductions have to leave some green growth, and very overgrown conifer hedges may need reducing gradually over more than one visit.
Laurel and privet
Laurel and privet usually respond well to hard cutting and can often be taken back significantly, regrowing thickly afterwards.
Native and beech hedges
Hawthorn, beech, hornbeam and mixed native hedges can usually be reduced firmly and will fill back in.
Height vs width
Sometimes only the height needs bringing down. Other times the width is the problem. Reducing one side at a time can help a hedge recover.

From a single garden boundary to long hedges around schools, pre-schools, businesses and rental properties, reductions are planned to suit the site.
Staged reductions
Very overgrown hedges don't always have to be tackled in one go. Reducing the height one year and the width the next, or one side at a time, gives the hedge a better chance to recover and fill back in, and keeps it looking reasonable in between. It is particularly useful for conifer hedges and older hedges that may struggle with one very hard cut. Todd will recommend whether a single visit or a staged approach will give you the best long-term result.
What to Expect
Before, During and After Your Hedge Reduction & Shaping Job
Before the visit
When you get in touch, a short description of the job and a couple of photos go a long way. Tell Todd roughly where the tree or hedge is, how big it is, and how easy it is to get to, through a side gate, over a wall, or from the front of the property. Mention anything nearby that needs protecting, such as a greenhouse, conservatory, pond, overhead cables or a neighbour's fence. If you already know or suspect the tree is protected, say so, but either way Todd will check for a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area before any work is agreed.
On the day
Todd arrives when he says he will, something customers mention again and again in reviews. The work area is set up first, with anything fragile protected and people and pets kept clear of where cutting is happening. The hedge reduction & shaping work is then carried out exactly as described in your quote. If anything unexpected turns up once work begins, such as hidden decay, Todd will talk it through with you before going any further; nothing is added without your say-so.
After the work
Brash, clippings and timber are cleared away and the area is raked and left tidy, so you're not spending your weekend clearing up. If you'd like to keep logs from the job, just ask when you book. Todd will also give you straightforward advice on aftercare and on when the tree or hedge is likely to need attention again, so you can plan ahead rather than waiting for a problem.
